Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally 2013

The Coppermines & Lakes Cottages are once again pleased to be sponsoring the Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally 2013. Not only is the rally a thrilling and spectacular event for spectators it is a great boost to the local economy and is welcomed by the village of Coniston. Coniston and the nearby Grizedale Forest have been closely associated with rallying since the RAC rally of old and we are glad to support the local Furness District Motor Club maintain this popular event. I believe that Grizedale Forest offers one of the most spectacular rally courses anywhere in the UK with the spectacular back drop of the Coniston mountains adding to the drama.

Steve Bannister and Kevin Rae took their second Roger Albert Clark Rally victory after another glorious three days of rallying through Yorkshire and the Scottish borders.

‘Banner’ was peerless in his Ford Escort Mk2 over 160 miles of special stages made even tougher by ice on Sunday morning. Two drivers took the fight to Bannister but were both caught out by the same deceptive crest in Pundershaw.“After the fight with Marty McCormack last year and losing on the last stage, this has made up a little bit,” said Bannister as he repeated his 2007 victory. “This is the best event of the year for historic cars, so it is great to win it again.”

THRILLING CLIMAX TO WELSH FOREST RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP

When competitors on the Cambrian Rally crossed the finish line in Llandudno on Saturday evening, Connor McCloskey became the first driver from Northern Ireland to win the Pirelli MSA Welsh Forest Rally Championship. Although he and co-driver Francis Regan finished second overall on the day in their Pirelli shod Subaru Impreza World Rally Car, victory on the event went to Scotland’s Euan Thorburn and Paul Beaton in their Ford Focus World Rally Car, it was enough to pip the less powerful Impreza of Alex Allingham from Winsford and co-driver Chris Williams at the end of a year long battle. At the finish, Connor said of his title win, “It’s been a great year for us and something to build on for the future.” Looking ahead, he commented, “If the Irish Sea wasn’t between us we would love to do it every year. The stages are great and the organisers are great.” Meanwhile Francis praised the Welsh stages, saying. “The Welsh forests are probably the best forests in Europe.

Championship two wheel drive honours were claimed by Lancastrian Rob Dennis and Andy Boswell from Swindon in their Mark 2 Escort. Rob was full of praise for the series as it reached its conclusion, saying, “The rallies are fantastic, the organisers, the guys we are competing against, just everything.”

The man Dennis edged out of the two wheel drive honours was David Lloyd Roberts from Bala but he and co-driver Dei Jones from Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant had the consolation of winning Class 5 in their Mark 2 Escort. David described their season as, “a good year, we’ve only had one non finish all year.”

BTRDA Cambrian Rally 2013 - 1400's

The 1400 tiles had been settled on the Trackrod Forest Stages but Dave Bennett / Andrew McNeil (Corsa) put in another very competitive performance to secure 3rd place in the Millers Oils 1400 Championship.

BTRDA Rally First has been a close battle all year between James West / Steve Eggington (Lupo) and Joe Evett / Calvin Houldsworth (MG ZR).  Having scored on 8 events Joe and Calvin had a slender championship lead but were waiting for the outcome of the Cambrian Rally where James and Steve could clinch the title if they scored maximum RF points on the event.  It was all going to plan until SS4 Alwen when in the very wet and slippy conditions the Lupo slid off the track and despite strenuous efforts they were unable to continue.

BRC Trackrod Rally Yorkshire 2013

Fast rising Welsh star Osian Pryce expunged the agonising memories of 12 months ago while claiming a second successive British Championship (BRC) victory at a sun-drenched Trackrod Rally Yorkshire in the forests near Pickering. Pryce, who was denied a first ever BRC win on a tie break after finishing level on total time with Tom Cave on the 2012 Trackrod event, made no mistake this time to add to his success on the previous round in Ulster a month ago. The 20-year old from Machynlleth, aided by co-driver Dale Furniss, made his intentions clear from the start to lead by less than a second from Finland's Jukka Korhonen, also in a Citroen DS3, at Friday's overnight halt.

The return of the BTRDA (British Trials and Rally Drivers Association) Championship to the Yorkshire event, after an absence of around a quarter of a century, resulted in an influx of an extra 66 cars and crews.

Hamsterley's Stephen Petch was able to celebrate the biggest win of his career, driving a Ford Focus WRC to a 35.8 second victory over the similar vehicle driven by Ripon dairy owner Charlie Payne

Trackrod Pre-87 and Historic Cup Llandudno's Matt Edwards led from start to finish in what turned into a battle of youth against experience in two Escort RS1800s. Edwards, the 2010 BTRDA 1400cc champion, eventually made up for blowing the engine of the car on his debut in it in Dalby Forest 10 months ago by claiming a narrow victory over local favourite Steve Bannister.

Korhonen breaks ten-year Finnish BRC drought

Jukka Korhonen and Marko Salminen finished the final stage of the Pirelli Richard Burns Foundation Rally 42.5 seconds clear of the chasing pack, making the 29 year old the first Finn to win a round of the MSA British Rally Championship since Jari-Matti Latvala ten year ago.

The pair led from start to finish in their Citroën DS3 R3T, building a lead of around a minute before easing off on Sunday when Alastair Fisher/Gordon Noble’s early challenge was curtailed by a puncture on Saturday’s fifth stage.

In a renewal of their tremendous sporting rivalry with fellow Ford Escort Mk2 crew Steve Bannister and Louise Sutherland that started on last year’s Roger Albert Clark Rally, McCormack and Clarke went 45s clear after seven tough and slippery stages in the Co Durham forest complex. Big crowds lined the stages to watch the spectacular action during an event that pumped an estimated half-million pounds into the local economy. “No real dramas,” said McCormack after taking the early championship lead with maximum points in the Rob Smith Rallying Series Three. However, round one winners Nick Elliott and Dave Price (Escort Mk2) had a rally to forget. “We were caught out by a slippery corner and put it in the ditch on its side,” said Elliott after sliding off the opening stage. Spectators finally got them out, and they levelled times with McCormack on two stages before pulling out, too far down to score useful points.

Charlie Payne and Craig Thorley took their Ford Focus WRC to a record 8th victory for the driver with a hat trick of recent wins on Sunday’s Riponian Stages Rally. Several “scary moments” and near spins during the initial stages then an engine problem later in the day saw the crew finish the event with “everything crossed” that their car would remain fit to complete the course, paying tribute at the finish to their service crew from BTR Prep who kept their car’s engine running. The crew were able to post 9 fastest stage times over the event’s 12 forest stages in the Hambleton Hills.

Notable among those caught out by the conditions being Bob Bean in his Mk1 Lotus Cortina who experienced “just a gentle roll”, while the similar car of Richard Holdsworth and Yvette Hughes bore evidence of a more violent inversion. More service crew heroics saw Bean’s car return to the fray after the mid-way halt with new windscreen and looking almost as it had at the start. The effort being repaid when Bean was able to reach the finish in first place from amongst the oldest “H1” category of Historic competitors.
Further RMSC crews to show strongly in the results included Shaun Wilson in 8th place in his Subaru. While among the Historic cars Tim Pearcey was being challenged hard, particularly on the early afternoon stages by the unique shape and sound of Whitby’s Chris Birkbeck in his rotary engined Mazda RX7, with Ripon’s Charlie Taylor and Steve Bielby just four seconds behind Birkbeck at the finish in their Mk2 Escort.

A blistering run through the final stage of the Team GMF Wyedean Forest Rally, Speech House, elevated Connor McCloskey and co-driver Francis Regan into the lead of the event just when it mattered! Competing in the Forest of Dean for the first time, the Ulstermen’s Subaru Impreza WRC arrived back at the Chepstow Racecourse finish seven seconds ahead of the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO9 of David Wright/Michael Wilkinson which, in turn, was three ahead of 2007 Wyedean winners Hugh Hunter/Andy Marchbank (Ford Focus WRC).
